Dr. R.E. White was born in Malaga, Ohio, on the 14th day of September, 1843, died at Zanesville, Ohio, June 28th, 1918.
When about 15 years of age he went with his parents to live in Barnesville, Ohio, attending common school and Fairbury College there until he was about 18 years of age. Enlisting in Co. B, 3rd Ohio Infantry in October 1861, he served until discharged in 1864. He was severely wounded at the battle of Perrysville, Kentucky, and in consequence his right arm at the shoulder remained stiff. After the war he studied medicine with Dr. F. Cooper and attended medical college at Cincinnati and commenced its practice at Bristol, Ohio. In 1869 he moved to Washington, Kansas, he was register of deeds two years and clerk of district court four years and moved to Norton County in 1879. Here he established himself in the drug business and practiced his profession but little. He married Miss Mary E. Trimble of Rural Dale, Ohio, May 13, 1867. She died in Norton in May 1888. They had four children, Harlan T., Inez, Jennie and a child dying in infancy. In 1890 he married Mrs. Lizzie Webster, who died a few years later.
He was elected coroner in 1887 and served one year. He was mayor in 1888 and reelected in 1889, during his term of office the city water works were built and the fire department organized.
Mrs. Inez Dickson, the only family member living and her husband brought the remains to Norton, and interment was made Tuesday afternoon in Norton Cemetery.
