Edmond, Devizes
1855-1902
John Franklin Graves was born in Newbern, Iowa, Nov. 19, 1855 and died Dec. 29, 1902 at Devizes. He was helping a neighbor cut down a tree for fire wood, when it fell the wrong way and hit him.
Mr. Graves was married to Mary Brawner, Nov. 25, 1877. They came to Logan, Kansas in the fall of 1888, where they opened a boarding house on Main street. Three children were born there. The family moved to Edmond, where Mr. Graves operated a drug store and studied medicine, from Grays Anatomy Book. ( I believe, like a lot of men of that time period, that is how he got the Dr. in front of his name.) In 1895, with his stock of medicine from the drug store, they moved to Devizes and he became a country doctor.
Courier, June 11, 1902- Dr. Graves is a registered practitioner under the laws of Kansas and is enjoying a lucrative practice all over the Sappa Country.
The Graves family were still at Edmond when the 1895 census were taken, and they had seven children, A, T, age 4; Elmer, age 12; Edith, age 8; Ida M., age 6; Lucinda, age 10; Morris M., age 1 and Nellie, age 14.
Mrs. Graves is buried at Raymond , S. D., and Dr. Graves was laid to rest in Norton Cemetery during a raging snow storm, and only men were able with horse-drawn sleds to make the 20 mile trip.
